LSU baseball coach Jay Johnson has completed his third season in Baton Rouge. Recent rumors have linked the ex-Arizona coach to the head coaching position at Texas.
Kendall Rogers, a prominent college baseball insider for D1Baseball, mentioned in a radio interview his belief that Texas might consider Johnson if it opts to replace current head coach David Pierce.
Although Pierce’s future at Texas remains unclear, Rogers expressed his belief that Texas would likely choose to retain him.Johnson, known for his success at Arizona before taking the LSU job, has led the Tigers to a 98-49 record in his three seasons at the helm. His potential move to Texas could shake up the college baseball landscape, as both LSU and Texas are traditional powerhouses in the sport. Time will tell whether these rumors materialize into a coaching change for either program.
“From what I’ve gathered, it seems Texas is unlikely to make a change,” Rogers shared with radio host Matt Moscona. “Knowing Chris Del Conte, he aims to make a big impact. He wouldn’t want a repeat of the Pierce hiring scenario.
“Jay Johnson would be a sensible choice from their point of view,” he added.
When questioned on Tuesday about the Texas position and any potential discussions, Johnson responded, “I have not been contacted. According to my contract, if there were to be contact, Scott Woodward, LSU’s athletic director, would be informed first,” Johnson explained. “I am extremely grateful to be part of this team and excited for our future direction. Things may be different from what I envisioned 18 months ago, but that’s alright. I believe I am exceptionally suited for this role, as it involves facing numerous challenges.”
At 47, Johnson guided LSU to the national title in 2023 and boasts a record of 137-62 across three seasons with the Tigers.
Pierce, previously at Tulane, has compiled a 297-162 record and made three College World Series appearances in his eight seasons with the Longhorns.
