WASHINGTON — A Boeing 737 Max 8 jet recently encountered a rare but potentially serious issue known as a Dutch roll before safely landing. The Federal Aviation Administration is probing the incident that occurred on a Southwest Airlines flight last month. The agency has stated its commitment to holding Boeing accountable following the review. Shortly after departing from Phoenix on May 25th, the aircraft experienced an uncontrollable side-to-side yawing motion, identified as a Dutch roll, at an altitude of 32,000 feet. The pilots of Southwest flight 746 managed to regain control, and the aircraft landed without incident in Oakland, as per a preliminary FAA report. “A Dutch roll is certainly not a desirable event,” commented Shem Malmquist, a commercial Boeing 777 pilot and instructor at Florida Tech.In response to the incident, Boeing has assured the public that they are actively collaborating with the FAA to investigate the root cause of the Dutch roll and implement any necessary corrective measures. The company emphasized its commitment to the safety and reliability of its aircraft, stating that incidents like these are taken very seriously. Although Dutch rolls are rare, they can pose a serious threat to the safety of flights. The aviation industry will be closely monitoring the findings of the investigation to prevent such occurrences in the future.
